Our Project: Solar Energy (Renewable Energy)

The Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources—such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat—which are renewable (naturally replenished).
Now if we talk a little about the solar energy we can say that refers to energy that is collected from sunlight and also that Solar energy can be applied in many ways, including to:
* Generate electricity using photovoltaic solar cells.
* Generate electricity using concentrated solar power.
* Generate electricity by heating trapped air which rotates turbines in a Solar updraft tower.
* Generate electricity in geosynchronous orbit using solar power satellites.
* Generate hydrogen using photoelectrochemical cells.
among others...
I pick this video because in it we can see the progress we the renewable energy and all the elements...

About my project i liked very much.. i learn that they are many renewable energy like the solar energies..in my country we can use the solar energy because we got a lot of sun light..so we have to take conscience..the world needs us..

David Merrill: Siftables, the toy blocks that think...!

David Merrill is a grad student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab. His main interest now is the Siftables project, the subject of his TEDTalk, on which he works with Jeevan Kalanithi.

He´s passion is for making new human-computer inter faces, that are a better match to the way our brains and bodies work..well now he has time to show us one point in this new desing space and a few of possibilities that they´re working to bring out of the laboratory..So the though he want to leave us with is that we´re on cusp of this new generation of tools for interacting with digital media, that are going to bring information into our world on our terms...

Well a Leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal..is someone who has folowers..is a influence.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, lear more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

Leader Role:

- Creat a vision

- Build teams

- Allocate tasks

- Develop people

- Motivate followers.

Motivation 4C:

* Collaboration

* Content

* Choice

* Credit.

Leaders creat Leaders not Followers..

Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal, is about character and vision...

Leadership is action not position..

Involue everyone, look for talents and abilities, communicate...

Interview a Friend

I am pleased to submit them to Andrea Marín..Now she is going to tell us what she think about engineering...

Name: Marín, Andrea
Date: May 16th, 2009

1.-Could you please define Engineering in your own words?

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical resolve a problem as the design, manufacture, economical structures, machines and processes that safely realize a desired objective.

2.-What influenced you to pursue Electronics engineering, industrial engineering, computer science engineering or informatics engineering?

Actually, since I studied in high school I always liked science related with knowledge and research. That’s why I like to study matters related to the study of industrial processes which lead to a specific target and the resolution of certain scientific problems in areas related to the career (Industrial Engineering).

3.-Could you please describe the educational process required to become an Engineer?

In my opinion, by selecting a variety of science, mathematics, and engineering-related course work and participating in any kind of programs and projects that expose students to engineering concepts.

4.-What are the skills you need to be a good engineer?

Well I think one of the most important things that the student must have is the passion and interesting about science and technologic. Also, a good numerical skills, comprehension and analysis by resolving a problem posed hypotheses.

5.-What job considerations were you looking for after you completed your education?

Find a job where I can demonstrate my skills, experiences and lessons learned so far in college. Some of them will be: Operation manager; safety, health and environment manager, and others related with industrial engineering.

6.-What's something of your school life that you enjoy the most?

Until now, everything I’ve learned in these 5 trimesters in college not only academically but also personally and in my days of high school the friends that I made because I know they last forever.

7.-From your perspective, what is the most difficult part of being an engineering student?

Well i think that the most difficult part of being an engineerin student is when you start to see the important subjects of the career, because if you don´t get anything from that subjects you can´t be a good engineer.

8.-What are your plans for the future?

After I graduated I’m going to travel to Canada or Argentina to get a master’s degree in operation manager or plant manager.

9.-Point out your most personally gratifying moment in engineering school.

Until now, the friends that a made. Also, everything I have learned from subjects who had never heard like: thermodynamics, systems development, operations research, etc.

10.-Why would you recommend Engineering as a career?

Because nowadays everything is included in the technological sciences and the demand of global companies that there need engineers with any specialization, taking into an account the skills and experience of the person.

Thanks Andrea that was nice..thanks for your help ;)..

Minimizing Energy Losses in Ducts

In new home construction or in retrofits, proper duct system design is critical. In recent years, energy-saving designs have sought to include ducts and heating systems in the conditioned space.

Many existing duct systems lose a lot of energy from leakage and poor insulation; see the insulation section for information about sealing and insulating your ducts.
Existing ducts may also be blocked or may require simple upgrades.

Efficient and well-designed duct systems distribute air properly throughout your home without leaking to keep all rooms at a comfortable temperature. The system should provide balanced supply and return flow to maintain a neutral pressure within the house.

You can find more of this articule on this link:

The most of the countries are looking for the solution to minimize the losses of energy, now they start the investigation with ducts and the find that is a hard work to do it but is not impossible...

Technological Applications for the Green Problem

The term technology refers to the application of knowledge for practical purposes.The field of green technology encompasses a continuously evolving group of methods and materials, from techniques for generating energy to non-toxic cleaning products.The present expectation is that this field will bring innovation and changes in daily life of similar magnitude to the information technology explosion over the last two decades. In these early stages, it is impossible to predict what green technology may eventually encompass.

Back in 2000, all the world's sights were on the incredible rise of the Internet and how it was going to radically transform the way we lived, worked, traded and interacted with each other. The Internet announced the beginning of a new era, one where problems would be solved with further amounts of technology. Concepts such as "green" and "sustainability" were not unheard of, but were still relegated to the realm of inconvenient problems that could be dealt with later.

We know today that the Internet clearly brought about important changes to our lives, but we also realized that technology was not the answer to all of our problems. At the same time, the complex issue of how to mitigate the long-term impact of our society to the planet remains unsolved.Interest in sustainable development increased across the globe as topics such as energy conservation and global warming took center stage. People are increasingly concerned with today's environment, and how our actions affect the future.

In 2000, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) launched its rating system for new construction. The USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system since then became the standard for green building in the US and close to 70 countries. The LEED rating system for new construction considers seven different categories as described in Exhibit 1. According to points assigned to each category, new buildings are then given a rating ranging from "Certified", "Silver", "Gold" and "Platinum" (the latter being the more restrictive rating). Not surprisingly, there are fewer buildings with the LEED-Platinum rating. Although the framework for evaluating the "greenness" of a building has been around for almost a decade now, it took some time for green initiatives in new construction to become the norm and not the exception. According to the USGBC, 10% of all new commercial construction in the US is expected to be green by 2010.

Although this may not appear to be much, it nonetheless translates into an estimated cost of US$60 billion - which by no means is irrelevant. One year ago, in an article in Inmobiliare Magazine we noted that 65% of energy consumption in the US comes from the operations of buildings. It is then easy to see why soaring energy prices have been raising the interest of all those involved with real estate development on subjects such as energy conservation.But at the same time that the seriousness of the problem is recognized by many, the concept of sustainability still meets quite a lot of skepticism (and in many cases suspicion) from others. It is generally assumed that it costs more to build green -and that is a true assessment. However, the cost differential is diminishing over the years. According to data compiled for a recent research report published by Prudential Real Estate Investors , the incremental cost of building green varies from less than 1% for LEED-Certified projects, to just over 10% for LEED Platinum projects. However, developers are claiming to have achieved much less incremental costs in recent projects. The same report notes that the $1 billion new Bank of America building in Manhattan, a LEED-Platinum project, had less than a 2% increase in costs when compared to conventionally built properties of a similar size.
